Just two weeks until Wessex Orchid Society welcomes Simon and Annie Pugh-Jones to Shawford Parish Hall to present on the subject of “Orchid Propagation”.
Orchid propagation can range from vegetative propagation – division and keiki’s - to the very scientific process required to grow from seed - pollination, germination and deflasking of seedlings.
In the hour long presentation Simon will discuss each of these options and demonstrate how to pollinate a flower and deflask some seedlings which will be available for Society members to take away.
Now that we are no longer part of the European Union learning to propagate and share the plants we already have within the UK is more important than ever.
Under normal circumstances this would be a members only meeting however we feel that such an important subject should be made available to other orchid enthusiasts so we are opening this up to non members for a £3 entry fee.
Simon set up the fabulous Writhlington School Orchid Project in 1991 in which students learnt how to grow orchids from seed. The project resulted in many horticultural and educational awards and introduced hundreds of young people to the world of horticulture. Retired from teaching, Simon and Annie now run Isle of Portland Orchids and propagate orchids from their historic collection of over 500 species. They will bring plants available for purchase on the day.
